The debate focused on the impact of EU regulation on the competitiveness of the automotive industry in Europe. The new legislative proposal on CO2 from cars is
just one of the key regulatory challenges the automotive industry is currently
facing. The objective of the CARS21 process, confirmed by the Commission in its
Communication and recently endorsed by the European Parliament, was to make
recommendations for a regulatory framework that enhances the competitiveness of
the European automotive industry while sustaining "further progress in
safety and environmental performance at a price affordable to consumers". The meeting discussed to what extent this is now being addressed.
